“Well, that was pretty harsh.”
“Oh,” she looks up. “Hey! Haven’t seen you for a while.”
He smiles, standing directly in front, hands in his coat pockets. “You haven’t needed to.”
“So what’s up?”
“Like I said, that was harsh.”
“Oh, that? Sorry. Didn’t mean it to be. If there were any part of me that could still be funny, I’d have figured out how to make it that.”
“Ah. Still harsh.”
“It occurs to me that although I’d like to save her, she’s only broken by my standards, not hers.”
“Right.”
“So is that really why you’re here?”
“Nah. Just thinking about you is all. Thought I’d check in.”
“NICE! I miss you.”
“Yeah, I miss you too.”
“How’s everyone else? How are the masses?”
“Fine.”
“Ah. Fine is good.”
“Sure.”
“Sit down.”
He plops into a chair, hands still firmly in the pockets of his suede, camel jacket. “OK.”
“On second thought, I was actually going to take a shower, so you can wait here if you want or you can come with.”
He pushes the chair back. “I’ll come with. I’ll wash your back for ya if you want.”
She smiles and sprints up the stairs, “Might as well, you’ve been watching it all along.”
