Almost ready

Oh, all right. I must admit I AM very much a social creature. I was delighted when Colleague not only stopped by tonight to graciously bring us dinner and some very kind get-well cards, but actually stayed and ate and drank beer and we chatted and laughed and it was nice for D, too, because he got to show off my and EBD’s Synyster Gates’ Schecter Guitar and his dad’s music from the early 60s. Colleague was very kind to Dez and Raul and to, quite frankly, hang out and listen to our stories. And it wasn’t just us . . . he told humorous and “Ew” stories, especially of an “associate” our age who I guess is dating someone he was draped all over at a sporting event a few weeks back (always gross, especially for someone over 40) and then allegedly decided to hang out at the rodeo because he’d been promised that a bevy of hot chickies 20 years his junior would be on hand to ogle and charm. Hahahaha! Gross!

The point is, tonight was fun and frivolous and it reminded me of the company Christmas dinner a little more than 20 years ago when I’d only worked at the newspaper for a few days — my big break — and Eddie Pells and I were in line at the buffet and we got to chatting about the merits or lack-thereof of Dan Reeves (I was on the “lacking” side of course and I stand by that). We laughed and debated and struck up a marvelous friendship and D — mind you this was back when we were an amazing couple, the perfect couple some said — was so delighted that I was “back” after having spent the past year-plus cleaning cabins and caring for the ranch and, most importantly, my children, that he smiled the entire night and delighted in the entire debate and still reminds me of that when I say I wish I’d had the opportunity to just be a mom.

He’s right. Tonight, after having been cooped up at home for a month, was truly a testimonial of that. I am a social person. And I am almost, almost looking forward to going back to work.
