The line had been rolling through my head for days, but it wasn’t until now that I realized what Galadriel saw was not a potential future, but rather the future. I equated “claiming his life” with death. But it’s a fate much worse. It’s the assassination of all that seemed innocent and hopeful and joyful, with no chance of retrieving those qualities that were stripped away. It’s the decimation of the soul. The quest did claim his life . . . I get it now.
