Bonus!

Edisonsblackdahlia was up this morning well before any hint of sunshine. Clad in his too-small, favorite green-and-blue flannel robe given to him by his Uncle Dan years before his growth spurt, he opened my bedroom door to let Ms. Mina run downstairs for her breakfast.

“Hmmmm. It’s early.” I mumbled.

“I want to go in to school early,” he replied simply and shut the door as I dragged my sorry ass out of bed. Turns out he wanted to sign up for a fifth-hour class and needed to get it done right away as the new semester loomed.

Bleary eyed, but washed, brushed, shoes clean and neat, we set out for the high school as the sky barely started turning to gray and I tried fruitlessly to put on makeup in the truck mirror in the dark. It was lighter and chilly by the time we arrived at the high school and dropped him, clad in jeans, T-shirt, a sweatshirt, shoes and socks, near the front of the building. He hopped out, said he loved me, too, and headed toward the double doors.

As we pulled away, my eyes focused on the school. Dark. And not dark because the sun was barely awakening, really dark. “Wait! Turn back!” I implored D as EBD neared the entrance. We pulled a U and sat at the stop sign. Sure enough, he yanked, nothing happened. I looked around and it hit me. We were not THAT early. Not so early that the doors should be locked and the parking lots empty! D said, “Noticed as we pulled up the lighted sign said ‘Winter break, Dec. 21-Jan. 7 . . . this would be through Jan. 7.”

Grateful we were intuitive enough to turn around, EBD hopped back into the truck. “I don’t think you go back today!” I said.

He was giddy.

“Bonus!” he said. “When I got up this morning, I thought ‘wouldn’t it be cool’ if something like this happened!” So we hauled his smiling ass on home and he disappeared into the house and it set the stage for an awesome day for me because I, too, dream of shit like that!
