A little slice of daytime discussion

My big boss had to take a call during our last staff meeting. We were, the five of us, sitting around the large white table in the middle of the office and, in hushed tones so as not to disrupt her call, we continued.

“What ever happened about that cystic fibrosis press release?” I asked David.

“They decided not to put it out,” he essentially replied.

“Bummer,” said I. “My cousin died of that two years ago this month. It’s a cause dear to my heart.”

“Ooooh, that’s right! That was so sad!” Caitlin said, and Danielle nodded in agreement.

“In fact,” I said, “I just saw a photo on facebook of my cousin’s husband at an official event and there’s a girl on his arm.”

“Oooh,” they said.

“Yeah, I mean it’s been almost two years, so he SHOULD be out there again, but it still bothered me,” I said.

“If I lost my wife, I’d never get married again,” David noted.

“Me neither,” said I. “I mean, been there, done that.” (Though, let’s be honest, we ALL say that, don’t we?)

David agreed. Big boss was still on the phone and Caitlin and Danielle aren’t married so didn’t weigh in. And then we all four told stories of men who, upon losing their wives, quickly remarried, as in within a few months, and what a mistake that always turned out to be.

“I’d go out and have sex, though,” I added and David nodded at that as if “of course” and Danielle leaned back in her chair chuckled and Caitlin laughed.

“I’d wait a couple of months, though, and I’d be discreet,” I said and we all laughed and then the big boss got off the phone and the meeting continued.
