I edited a ‘Decision’ story about whether smoking is a major risk factor for vascular disease and the premise of these particular articles is to say “On One Hand,” and make the case for, and “On the Other Hand,” and make the case against the article topic. But on that one, the evidence of smoking being a risk factor for major vascular disease was indisputable and there was nothing to make the case against, so the writer had to simply add a laundry list of other health issues caused by smoking.
I have maybe three friends who smoke and it honestly makes me worried and sad. Maria’s Mom and Dad both died because of smoking and she has Lupus now but still smokes. Two of my friends died because of lung cancer caused by second-hand smoke (Terry was 32, Mr. Futhey 54), one friend died because she smoked, and I have one friend who I worry about because of second-hand smoke. Being around smokers HAS has given that friend really sexy crows feet! . . . Though “sexy crows feet” probably wouldn’t qualify as an “On the Other Hand.”
