Whoa! Man! That didn’t take long!

“What’re you doing?” he’s glaring at me from across the computer, but the corners of his eyes turn downward in concern. “You know, even the most lowly play a role here. Don’t be so quick to assume you’re not playing yours.”

“I want to die.”

“No, you don’t,” he’s insistent and his eyes are green. “Just rein it in. You don’t need them; you just need me. Trust me.”

“I don’t know,” says I. “I hate it here.”

He sighs; I start to cry. He tossles my hair, unwashed because I didn’t sleep last night and thus didn’t feel like doing anything the least bit exceptional because of it.

“Okay,” I sniff.

He reads my thoughts and gets that monster smile. “You don’t have to run screaming into the night,” he winks. “You can back away slowly.”

I choke out a laugh; he leaves.
